Hemera
2021 18 x 18" acrylic / mixed media / graphite
Hemera was the personification of “day” in Greek mythology. In geology, Hemera is a stratigraphic zone comprising the time range of a particular fossil species the time during which a race of organisms is at the apex of its evolution. Here Hemera is visualized as a massive weather system — that once obscured light — dissipating into the brightness of day once again.

Fun fact: this painting used approximately 6,400 strips of painters tape to mask 480 cells of the grid at least three times... approximately 71 roles of blue tape.
17 Hemera & 18 Erebus
Note: look closely, the cells of the grid filled in are exactly opposite 1:1 between these two paintings.
