Erebus

2022    18 x 18"   acrylic / mixed media / graphite / vanta black

Erebus in Romanized Ancient Greek means “deep darkness, shadow” or the personification of absolute darkness. Hesiod’s Theogony identifies him as one of the first five beings in existence, born of Chaos.

The perceived meaning of Erebus is “darkness”; the first recorded instance of it was “place of darkness between earth and Hades”. The name originates from Proto-Indo-European sources: Sanskrit rájas, Gothic riqis, and Old Norse.

Note: look closely, the cells of the grid filled in are exactly opposite 1:1 between these two paintings.
