		<description>Intro
The SeriesThese twelve series of two paintings each (24 total) explore the concepts of being human and finding balance, quiet reminders to see both sides of every experience, and (as described in Inspiration) to “feel the sun even in the dark…”
The Structural Theme Behind The WorkThe collection uses a 1x4 grid based on four vertical rectangles per each square — a deeply symbolic foundation for myriad visual concepts. These four units correlate to the four elements of earth, fire, and water, the four directions, the four seasons, and other numeric meanings. The grid inherently inspires exploration of size, scale, and directional points of connection.
The StylePrecise grid work inspired by Josef Müller-Brockman and Agnes Martin (and other pioneers of Minimalist art and Swiss typography) is intentionally “broken” with an avalanche of sloppy paint application — with stylistic influence adapted from Abstract Expressionist legends like Jackson Pollock and Wassily Kandinsky.

	“Seldom seen, growing along the ocean floor, the white-plume anemone is a watery blossom. It is white lace opening under tons of black, opening as if bathed in the sun, while so far from the sun. This is the trick to staying well, isn’t it: to feel the sun even in the dark.
To not lose the truth of things when they go out of view. To grow just the same. To know there is still water, even when we are thirsty. To know there is still love, even when we are lonely. To know there is still peace, even when we are suffering. None of this invalidates our pain, but only strengthens our way back into the light.”
(Excerpt from “Book of Awakening” by Mark Nepo)

Artist Reflection

Even In The Dark
is a collection of fine art paintings depicting facets of the authentic human experience. Everyone can connect with the work — which explores and expresses balance, humanity, dualism, and opposition. It’s inspired by a passsage written by Mark Nepo from A Gradual Awakening, who profoundly reminds us that balance connects with what it means to be and feel human.
Each series of two is comprised of one white and one black piece. Whether opposed or in concert, each explores the balance of composition, media, and execution.
Minimalist grids clash with and crash into sloppy paint application. The depth of concepts is subtly layered below each visual expression. The balance of inherent simplicity at face value and deeper mental, spiritual, and emotional layers of meaning provokes unique, visceral responses.
These responses occur as one considers the public, the private. The bad, the good. The deep pain, the exhilirating joy. The intimate side, the public persona. The dialectical nature of these pieces challenges and encourages people to explore the middle space between a departure from light and return to darkness — and vice versa. When we consider seeing the darkness or lack of light as beauty or a state of uncommon positivity, we can also reflect and explore the idea that too much light, brightness can burn us out and is not sustainable.In rethinking “black and white” one may consider new perspective and the “gray areas in between find, peace, creativity, and more acceptance.&#38;nbsp;

		<description>Purpose
The twelve series of Even In the Dark works explore the vast experiences of being human. This body of work encourages personal exploration of the inherently dialectical nature of being human, emphathy and sympathy, thinking about a softer approach to how we exist, and connection to a higher balance. And, perhaps this may inspire less judgment, more unconditional love, honest authenticity, and radical acceptance.
With all this taken into consideration, a portion of future sales of paintings will be donated to a cause of the purchasers’ choosing.
Causes and organizations to receive donations will be announced soon.&#38;nbsp;

Photography by Emilie CampbellBorn and raised in California and drawn to the mountains of Utah for three separate periods of his life, Tyler R Walseth is an artist across graphic design, photography, letterpress, illustration, and fine art painting. With a deep creative flow in his DNA he balances a career in tech and business building digital products (SF &#38;amp; NYC) with what inspires him most: exploring visual abstract expressionism through the lens of minimalist design. Tyler’s style is a balance of opposites — described as "a collision of minimalist graphic design grids and the work of Agnes Martin and a messy Jackson Pollock experiment." He received his BFA in Graphic Design from BYU and a MBA in Design Strategy at California College of the Arts in San Francisco.&#38;nbsp; ↘︎ Say Hi

		<description>Dark I.

2019&#38;nbsp; &#38;nbsp; 16 x 20" &#38;nbsp; acrylic / mixed media / graphiteAn exploration and perspective shift of the beauty of the absence of light. The deep reach of the night, a new moon, the quiet, the stillness... all inspire reflection, restoration, growth, and regeneration.This piece is incredibly unique from the other 23 in the collection in that it was completed from start to finish at the exct moment of the New Moon in Virgo on September 20, 2019. Further, very little light was used in the studio space, to lean into imperfection, obscurity, darkness, and it wasnt until around sunrise each day that the night’s work was revealed. This piece explores the silent transit of a dark moon across the night sky, and a total absence of light symbolic of renewal, rebirth, and restart.&#60;img width="2000" height="2000" width_o="2000" height_o="2000" data-src="https://freight.cargo.site/t/original/i/bc45c354e6973e61b29d2352187ab195e769c9a252ed950b6b8ab0055b3c8803/02_Dark-I.png" data-mid="209190150" border="0"  src="https://freight.cargo.site/w/1000/i/bc45c354e6973e61b29d2352187ab195e769c9a252ed950b6b8ab0055b3c8803/02_Dark-I.png" /&#62;

		<description>Light II.

2019 &#38;nbsp; &#38;nbsp;16 x 20" &#38;nbsp; acrylic / mixed media / graphite

Our souls are drawn to light. It’s been proven less than five minutes of sunlight upon waking up can bring a hormonal increase and affect mood all day. To want to see what’s good, to look up and forward, and to seek positive vibrations are all inherent desires. And with light, we feel joy, the spirit can be energized, and our vision and vitality are lightened.

		<description>Dark II.

2019&#38;nbsp; &#38;nbsp; 16 x 20" &#38;nbsp; acrylic / mixed media / graphite

Darkness is inherently a human emotion, a feeling of loss, shattering heartbreak, and loneliness. But it is in these moments we find “the gold” — the reflection, reassembly, regeneration, regrowth, and reimaginaing of our selves. The dark can be the emotional “fertile ground” for growth and coming back to the light.

		<description>Ascent

2019&#38;nbsp; &#38;nbsp; 18 x 24" &#38;nbsp; acrylic / mixed media / graphite

After periods of stillness or even stagnation—we rise again. And with upward momentum, we lift ourselves up in body and spirit. “Getting back up” dances with ideas of a gaze heavenward and increase. Moving up, we can aspire, aggrandize, take flight, and manifest openly.
