Libra
2020 11 x 14" acrylic / mixed media / graphite / charcoal
Libra was known in Babylonian astronomy and ancient Greece as Mul Zibanu (the “scales” or “balance”), or alternatively as the Claws of the Scorpion. The scales were held sacred to the sun god Shamash, who was also the patron of truth and justice. Since these times, Libra has been associated with law, fairness, and civility. Scorpion’s claws became the Scales.
Balance in all things allows our understandings — dark/light, expand/collapse, masculine/feminine, agitation/tranquility, high/low, sun/moon — to flourish.
